Day 4: Esmely’s Take

Today we woke up to our first regular day. In the morning we had amazing pancakes that Walt made for us. We then went to our worksite to continue working on the home. We began with a stretch and confession icebreaker and we got to know each other very well. Mike is quite the story teller, he should quit his job at the CAP center and sell his stories to Comedy Central. Afterwards we went to Lake Pontchartrain and got to take in all the beauty of the Louisiana water. It’s very apparent the reconstructive and beautification efforts that went into making the lake a peaceful site. We all enjoyed and Donut offered us all fried chicken! What’s better than some fried chicken and a New Orleans view?? It was just such a sweet moment that I really appreciated at that moment.
During reflection, we spoke about what home meant for us so that we could understand how impactful our work can be for not only for the families hag lived in the houses we are building but for ourselves as well. Although we are doing a lot of interior work on a blank wall with dust everywhere, this is where parents raised their children and where children learned so much about what they knew about life. It is important to realize the impact we are having on someone’s house but even more important to realize the impact we are having on someone’s life. There has been a lot of trust put into not necessarily our skills but our genuine concern for our fellow citizens and we have to ensure that we are meeting if not exceeding their expectations.
